The #ShutdownDC movement has made clear their intentions to try and stop Washington DC traffic through groups in large numbers in order to raise awareness and protest climate change. According to their website, The movement will “block key infrastructure to stop business-as-usual, bringing the whole city to a gridlocked standstill,” in order to encourage the government to do more to combat global warming.
Although the government is aware of the protest, there is little they can do as the movement is exercising their first amendment rights. “Although we are unaware of specific locations that will be impacted, there is the potential for traffic delays and disruptions throughout the District,” a post on Washington’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency read.
Over the past weeks, protests and movements encouraging government action on climate change have sharply grown. On Friday, students in dozens of cities across America skipped school to encourage action. Currently, the United Nations are meeting in New York City to discuss a variety of issues, including climate change and what can be done about it.
