Area 51, also known as Homey Airport and Groom Lake, is a highly secretive United States Air Force facility most likely due to the classified information it holds. That classified information, however, has been subject to many theories. As of now, the US Air Force has only made public that Area 51 is a “testing range” for Air Force planes and weapons.
The most popular of these planes being the U-2 Lockheed, a stealth plane that is used in combat to this day. In fact, the U-2 aircraft was one of the soul purposes for Area 51’s establishment in 1955, as part of CIA project AQUATONE to develop faster and stealthier aircraft. Although the CIA says the correct names for the facility are Homey Airport or Groom Lake, the first document that acknowledged the existence of the facility called it “Area 51” during the Vietnam War.
Right now, the Area 51 facility has gained publicity due to a current internet meme about “raiding” the Air Force facility. A Facebook event was set up by a 20-year-old college student as a joke, but soon became viral with over 2,000,000 RSVP’ing for the event. The goal of the event, as stated on Facebook, is to “see them aliens”. It is due to start today. When questioned by the Washington Post, Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews said that they are aware of the event, and that “the U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets”.
