According to a new study, astronomers found a planet about three times the size of Earth and have dubbed it “The Forbidden Planet” due to its rarity. Despite its size and the fact that it has its own atmosphere, the planet is hotter than Mercury with a temperature of 1,832 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Forbidden Planet, technically and scientifically known as NGTS-4b, completes an orbit around its star every 1.3 days and has a mass twenty times that of Earth. An international team of scientists at the Next-Generation Transit Survey observing facility spotted the exoplanet, and are currently researching the environment of the planet.
The name “The Forbidden Planet” drew inspiration from the 1956 movie of the same name, but has earned its name due to its size. The exoplanet is based in the Neptunian Desert, a cluster of planets and stars where every planet is no larger than Neptune, but the giant planet is just 20% smaller than Neptune.
