Famous attorney Michael Avenatti was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on the basis of fraud and identity theft with his former client and adult actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, had cut ties with Avenatti before, “(He) had dealt with me extremely dishonestly.” Avenatti is also being indicted for his attempt to extort over $20,000,000 from sports and clothing company Nike.
The biggest decision though is prosecutors charging the 48-year-old with stealing around $300,000 from her book contract, and then using said money to pay employees at his law firm and a coffee business that he owned. In the court papers, Daniels is referred to not by her name, but rather by “Victim-1”.
Avenatti rose to fame when representing Stormy Daniels in her legal battle against Donald Trump, in which Daniels said he had an affair with her. Avenatti played a contributing role in prosecuting Michael Cohen, a former Trump attorney, and sentenced him to his current three years in prison to his payments to multiple women in order to silence them.
