Florida lawmakers passed a bill last week that would forbid law enforcement agencies and local governments from adopting policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. In other words, the bill would force law enforcement to work with federal immigration agencies such as ICE to enforce federal law, which includes banning sanctuary cities.
Florida’s Republican governor Ron Desantis made banning sanctuary cities in the state a key platform in his gubernatorial campaign. 11 other states have already implemented anti-sanctuary city laws, which would prevent illegal immigrants from legally living in a city without fear of deportation. Nine states, however, have pro-sanctuary city laws that legalize the matter.
President Donald Trump, also a Republican, has publicly been against sanctuary city policies, stating that they endanger public safety. Despite his stances, though, his effort in blocking federal funding to sanctuary cities has been blocked multiple times by federal judges. As of now, Florida looks to be the twelfth state to illegalize sanctuary city policy.
