Julain Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London this morning. Assange, who is part Ecuadorian, had been granted asylum in the embassy for seven years as he was avoiding extradition from Sweden on charges of sexual assault.
Wikileaks is a company that is notorious for leaking classified documents from the US government. Over the course of the 2016 Presidential Election, they leaked emails from the Clinton Presidential Campaign, as well as other classified documents from the Trump Administration. Most notably, they hacked into an FBI database, releasing the identities of hundreds of undercover agents.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said that he Assange will appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London as shortly as possible. The decision to revoke Assange’s asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy was explained by Ecuador’s president, Lenin Moreno, for his “discourteous and aggressive behavior”.
