Kristjen Nielson, the secretary of Homeland Security to Donald Trump, has resigned. The news, which first broke out after Trump tweeted it Sunday afternoon, has gained mixed reactions from both sides of the aisle. A source close to CNN said that she was under pressure to do it, and didn’t fight for her job.
According to a senior administration official, Nielson “believed the situation was becoming untenable with the President becoming increasingly unhinged about the border crisis and making unreasonable and even impossible requests.” Reporters are suggesting that she got pressure to design due to frustration with the border wall and current plans to fund it.
Trump announced on Twitter that Kevin McAleenan, the current US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, will become secretary of Homeland Security for the short term. He is a holdover from the Obama Administration, but sources say that Trump has put enough trust in him for the short term.
