President Donald Trump agreed to House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s request to postpone his State of the Union address until after the partial government shutdown. The decision was made Wednesday night, after Pelosi disinvited him from visiting the chamber during the shutdown.
“As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address. I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative – I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over,” Trump tweeted Wednesday. Trump also tweeted that there will be no “alternative venue” for the address due to the historical significance of the chamber.
Before, Pelosi requested Trump to deliver the address from a different place due to “security reasons”. In response, Trump claimed that both the Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service cited “no concerns” in the security of his speech. As for now, it is the first compromise in an already long fight to end the government shutdown.
